In reality, you’re the typical American consumer.

So am I.

We all use our pay regardless of how big or small and spend it on things we need or want. We purchase gifts on the internet or buy food from shops, and we purchase coffee before heading to work. We can purchase it either in person or through our phones. However, what about doing it from our vehicles?

Your car is the only spot that’s without e-shopping. However, GM is changing the rules with an app designed to add convenience, and perhaps the caffeine you need, on your every day journey.

In the last week General Motors unveiled an application named Marketplace. The app, designed for the in-car information systems of GM accessible in Chevys, Buicks, GMCs and Cadillacs allows owners to place orders for coffee, book reservations at restaurants, and organize several other services. Numerous prominent partners have accepted the offer to be participants in the Marketplace program and we’re expecting that list to increase as Marketplace becomes more popular.

CNET writes,

For instance, you can place an order (and pay) in advance in Starbucks, IHOP, Wingstop, Applebee’s and Dunkin’ Donuts. You can also make reservations for dinner at TGI Fridays. Find the closest Shell station and within the next few months you’ll be able pay for your fuel from inside your vehicle. There are some features in-house including as the possibility to buy or extend the OnStar subscription, or to receive coupons for discounts on oil service and accessories.

As a frequent road-tripper and a lover of all things tech-related I believe that Marketplace could be a wonderful idea. The critics will argue that the program encourages distracted driving however TechCrunch talked to GM Director Global Digital Experience & Connected Vehicles John McFarland, and said that he believes Marketplace is a good idea.

Instead of having someone have the obligation to planning to check their phone take a break and park in the parking lot while they’re doing so, it causes the person to lose precious time, or worse is the potential for drivers to make use of their mobile while driving which is something we do not want to happen… We believe that we should do everything we can to ensure that it is available and secure while moving.

This is an innovative move by GM that is the first of its kind in the auto industry. It is likely to be featured in infotainment systems on vehicles all over the world.
